Sugar: Due to weak rains, the country is expected to have a shortfall

Sugar production likely to rise by 24 percent to 25 million tonnes

With good rainfall this year due to good rainfall in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, in the marketing year starting from next month, the total sugar production in the country is expected to increase 24% to 25 million tonnes. Government sources have given this information. This is an initial estimate based on the information provided by the State Governments. This estimate is consistent with the estimates of the Indian Sugar Industry Association (ISMA), the leading organization of sugar industry.

However, due to weak rains, the country is expected to have a shortfall of 2.02 million tonnes in the current marketing session 2016-17 (October to September). India is the second largest producer of sugar in the world. Official sources said that in the meeting of Sugarcane Commissioners of the state convened by the Union Food Ministry, the state governments have submitted the figures of sugar production estimates after possible sugarcane production and sugar acquisition prospects. Sources said that on the basis of information received, the total sugar production in the marketing year 2017-18 is estimated to be 25 million tonnes.
