SOFIA. Heavy rain and hailstorms have kept the growers in Bulgaria busy over the last few days. The impact still needs to be reviewed. Although sunshine is forecasted over the next few days, local storms are also expected, and the market remains tense.

Delays in sowing

At the beginning of May sowing had been completed on 596,021 ha – 20,5% less than at the same time last year. Acreage for striped sunflower seeds has even declined by as much as 47.2% to 2,346 ha. Since sowing is still under way patience is required until final estimates are available. A drop on last year, however, seems inevitable. The USDA reckons with a drop in European production of 6% to 9.1 M mt in 2018/19.
