SOFIA. While precipitation is supplying some of the growing regions with the required moisture, it is promoting disease and pest infestation in others. Rain and temperature fluctuations are also forecast for the next few days in the Bulgarian sunflower growing areas.

Bargain prices for the new crop
On paper, the commodity prices for black sunflower seeds, in-shell, purity 96% are still dropping and currently lie at a level of 330 EUR/mt CPT Varna. In fact, however, there is hardly any trading activity on the sunflower seed market, and not much is going on in the big ports such as Varna and Burgas.

Market players are assuming that many suppliers are keeping business going until the end of May/middle of June, before they take a break for the summer. Until the end of the 2016/17 season, the level for bakery seeds should remain around 0.73 EUR/mt. Depending on the quality, contracts for delivery of commodities from the new crop (October 2017 to March 2018) are already being offered starting at 0.61-0.62 EUR/mt FCA Bulgaria.
