Sunflower seeds: more high-oleic kernels in 2020?

SOFIA. The first estimates for Bulgarian sunflower seed production in 2020 have already been submitted. Now market players are speculating on the distribution between high-oleic kernels and other varieties.

Speculations on distribution

The European grain traders' association (Coceral) estimates this year's crop at 1.783 million metric tonnes, which would represent a decline of 5.6% compared to last year (1.888 million metric tonnes). Experts reckon that the area under cultivation will be reduced from 755,000 ha to 743,000 ha. The yield per hectare is also set lower at 0.24 metric tonnes per ha (last year: 0.25 metric tonnes per ha).
