SOFIA. The price of oil, the US dollar exchange rate, and the weak export market have caused the prices for sunflower seeds in shell and oil seeds to go south. Meanwhile, a bitter price war is raging.

 A raging price war

Currently, no ships are being loaded in Varna. Although the prices for in shells have dropped down to 345 EUR/mt, the producers are still demanding raw seed prices of up to 355 EUR/mt. Since there are increasingly few buyers interested in such a high price class, it remains to be seen who will prevail in the end.

However, market players are expecting stable prices. Especially since there is hardly any raw seed still available in Bulgaria. The processors will probably soon resort to imports from the Ukraine and Moldavia.

Processors are pleased with full order books

The prices for bakery kernels still tend to be stable. They are not affected by the price development for black sunflower seeds. The processors are working to capacity, especially in April. Distributors are expecting price surges this summer. Because of the increased risk of insect infestation and high temperatures, many processing facilities are closed in the summer.
