Sunflower seeds: shortage of oilseeds supports prices

SOFIA/KYIV. Firm prices due to lower availability are posing challenges for the Eastern European sunflower seed market this year. This is exacerbated by the disappointing rapeseed crop, which is additionally supporting prices.

Rapeseed is becoming a problem for Bulgarian sunflower seeds

In Ukraine, the sunflower seed harvest is slowly coming to an end, with more than 90% of the acreage already harvested. The current result is 9.3 million mt. Farmers are holding back their raw materials in an endeavour to achieve higher prices by putting pressure on buyers. At best, processors were able to buy unhulled sunflower seeds for UAH 24,400-25,000/mt (EUR 548.84-562.34/mt) CPT, with some growers setting their prices even higher.
