FRANKFURT. Walnuts have been consumed for more than 9,000 years and remain a popular snack and ingredient for sweets and baked goods. Liqueurs and oils are also produced.

The walnut originally stems from Syria and south and west Anatolia. The Romans introduced it to Europe and it is now mainly cultivated in China.

It takes the walnut tree 10-20 years to bear fruit and 40 years before it produces good yields. A walnut treed can, however, bear up to 150 kg of fruit.

Walnuts are harvested from the end of September til the beginning of October in Europe. I
