SOFIA. The high quality characteristics of wheat this year, on the background of competitive prices, keep exported volumes high. Expectations are for a higher sowed acreages of the grain for next season.

BULGARIA. The much higher protein content of this year’s Bulgarian wheat demands higher prices. An increase in the price of the biggest producers and exporters of wheat within the Black sea region usually have spillover effects on local prices. However, a growth of a few euro could slow down the export turnover rate, as for the time being shipped volumes abroad are at all-times high. Anyhow, a significant growth in prices in the short-term seems out of the question on the background of excessive supply of the grain within the Black sea basin this season. Local prices of wheat are customarily set lower than those of other regional exporters.

Wheat: All in favor of the grain

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 19th of October 2017, farmers sowed 629,782 ha of wheat, as on a year-to-year basis the number is 14.2% higher. This season, the country realized the highest aggregate output for at least two decades – 5,761,626 mt. Since milling and feed wheat shipments abroad have been strong on a yearly basis – for comparison, during season 2016-17, total exports reached 4,168,623 mt, – the market expects this year, planted acreages to exceed those of 2016. Even more, this marketing season, exports are projected to break last year’s record while according to local exporters shipments abroad will maintain a strong trend at least till the end of February 2018!
