CANBERRA. The good crop result in 2024 and the shift in Chinese demand bring record exports to the Australian almond sector.

Production up by more than 40,000 mt

Supported by this year's record crop in Australia, almond exports are also running at full speed. As announced in the October report by the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council, around 153,550 mt of shelled almonds were produced in the Australian 2024/2025 season (March-February), which is a good 40,000 mt more than in the previous year. However, market players are concerned about the frosts at the end of September, which could have a negative impact on yields for the coming 2025/2026 crop.

Exports remain record-breaking

September shipments set a new monthly record. A total of 24,685 mt of shelled and unshelled almonds were shipped domestically and overseas, an increase of 90.1% compared to the same month last year. While domestic deliveries fell by 13.8% to 2,063 mt, the export volume increased by 113.5% to 22,622 mt. In September, China remained by far the most important sales market for Australia this season, after the country increasingly turned away from the USA as a trading partner in recent months. China imported 11,167 mt from Australia in September, an increase of 177.1% compared to the same month last year. Shipments to India (+78.8% to 4,545 mt), Turkey (+189.2% to 1,796 mt) and Germany (+79.9% to 831 mt) also increased during this period, while countries such as Vietnam (-15.2% to 1,346 mt) and Spain (-38.7% to 192 mt) drastically reduced their imports.

Since the start of the 2024/2025 season on 1 March, a total of around 111,812 mt of Australian almonds (shelled and unshelled) have been shipped domestically and overseas. While domestic shipments declined by 3.2% year-on-year to 14,617 mt, exports increased by 33% to 97,195 mt. Shipments to China more than doubled year-on-year to 52,442 mt, while India (+9.3% to 15,458 mt), the United Arab Emirates (+107.9% to 2,821 mt) and Germany (+23.1% to 2,745 mt) also increased their imports. In contrast, shipments to Turkey (-7% to 6,069 mt), Vietnam (-27.6% to 4,757 mt) and Spain (-63.6% to 2,823 mt) declined overall.
