NEW DELHI. Producers are having a difficult time in India as the import duty for edible oils has been reduced. Tables may, however, turn for peanuts.

Difficult time for producers

Peanuts have fallen by 10% in the last four months, and prospects are not that encouraging for the next two months. Issue is that NAFED will sell peanuts at lower the prices. This can have a deep impact by bringing local buying to a temporary standstill for other suppliers. In addition, the import duty reduction has prompted edible oil imports to skyrocket. Estimate is that 1.52-1.55 million mt of crude edible oils were imported in the month of July. Imports may also rise by an additional 10-15% in September.
