CANBERRA. Australia’s almond exports set a new monthly record in June. The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council has published its latest estimates for the 2026 Australian crop. Meanwhile, preparations for the 2027 crop are already underway in the growing regions.

Preparations for the 2027 crop are underway

Heavy rainfall earlier this year led to quality losses and harvest delays in two key Australian almond-growing regions. However, experts had previously anticipated high yields. In the July issue of its Nutfruit Magazine, the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) therefore estimates Australia’s almond crop at 166,892 mt (shelled); this would not only represent a 7% increase on last year but would also exceed the record crop of 163,148 mt from 2024/2025.

As reported by the Almond Board of Australia, the critical phase of preparations for the 2027 crop has also just begun for Australian almond growers. Around 300,000 commercial beehives are currently being moved into orchards across the country in time for the pollination period.

New June record

Following harvest delays and the resulting slow start to the 2026/2027 export season, Australia’s almond exports are now back in full swing. According to the latest report from the Almond Board of Australia, June exports rose by 22% year-on-year to 17,206 mt. This is primarily due to significantly higher shipments, particularly to the Asian region. China (+15% to 9,512 mt), India (+39% to 3,113 mt) and Vietnam (+92% to 1,544 mt) have drastically increased their imports, whilst countries such as Turkey (-15% to 814 mt) and Germany (-37% to 321 mt) are seeing a downward trend. Shipments to the domestic market, by contrast, fell by 29% to 1,523 mt. Overall, however, domestic and overseas shipments of almonds in July still recorded an increase of 16% to 18,728 mt.

However, looking at the season so far, Australian almond shipments are still slightly behind last year’s figures. Shipments to China, however, have reached a new record of 24,900 mt (+14% year-on-year), whilst Vietnam also increased its imports by 83% to 3,777 mt. By contrast, shipments to India, Turkey and Germany, amongst others, fell significantly. Seasonal exports totalled 42,042 mt, whilst domestic shipments fell by 13% to 6,592 mt. In total, between March and June 2026, 48,634 mt of almonds (both shelled and in-shell) were supplied to domestic and overseas markets, representing a 4% decrease compared with the previous year.
