MADRID/SACRAMENTO. Spain’s almond exports may not be quite as bad as anticipated for August, yet a new and controversial player has emerged. US suppliers are trying their best to come to terms with September’s disappointing performance.

Russia steps up buying in Spain

Estimates predict a 25-30% or even larger decline in production in Spain this year as traders report. Most recently the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) stated that Spain’s production would decline by 27% to 68,273 mt as compared with last year. Issues are not only the spring frosts witnessed at the start of April and bad pollination but also the drought and excessively high temperatures experienced in summer. Producers are complaining about volumes and sizes while harvesting is in full swing.
