MADRID. Exports continued strong for almonds in Spain in March. New crop estimates are being issued for 2025/2026, and Trump sparked some upheaval over the weekend.

Strong exports

March was a very strong month for Spain’s export industry. At 14,543 mt almond exports were 30% up on last year’s 11,194 mt. Total exports surged by an impressive 22% between August 2024 and March 2025 as compared with the same period in 2023/2024. Although shipments to France have climbed by a comparatively moderate 9%, the country has remained the leading export destination for Spain. Germany and Italy are sporting even more impressive gains of 27% and 39% respectively. Egypt as the only non-European destination in amongst the top ten is showing the highest rise of 176%.

Crop estimate turns optimistic

Suppliers point out that the preliminary production estimate of 122,000 mt for almonds in Spain issued at this year’s Nut and Dried Fruit Council Congress in Majorca will have to be revised upwards. This is because bearing hectares will range higher than last year’s 656,823 ha. In addition, the heavy rains perceived in March will indeed limit the crop, yet the damage has not been uniform. As much as 80% of the area on which almonds are grown is non-irrigated. Current predictions show that the crop may exceed 130,000 mt.

US-EU negotiations continue

Negotiations between the EU and the USA over Trump’s proposed tariffs are ongoing. On Friday, Trump threatened to slap a 50% tariff on EU imports as of 1 June after complaining that the talks with the EU were not yielding any results. In return, EU politicians pointed out that their US counterparts were not responding to proposals to resolve trade barriers. On Sunday, Trump fortunately suspended the high tariff until 9 July after a telephone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. At present, a 10% baseline tariff is in place for EU imports along with a 25% tariff for EU aluminium and steel. The EU will impose 25% counter tariff for US almonds as of 1 December.
