MADRID/SACRAMENTO. In response to new customs regulations for Spanish olives exported to the USA, calls for a higher import duty on US almonds in the EU are getting louder.

The curse on prices has been broken

The Spanish almond market has not been at all happy with the way prices have evolved over the last few months. Frost and dry weather meant the 2017 Spanish almond crop turned out smaller than initially anticipated. Despite this, prices continued to fall –  or at best they stabilised at a low level – as a record crop in California meant large numbers of imported almonds.

The prices for Spanish almonds have again risen this week. Depending on variety and size, prices increased by 0.05-0.20 EUR
