CÓRDOBA. With the harvest underway new production estimates have emerged in Granda, Spain’s largest producing region for almonds. As arrivals are picking up more offers are being issued for the new crop.

11% production decline in Granada

With the harvest well underway more crop size estimates are being issued in different parts of Spain. As Agroinformacion reports prospects are relatively encouraging in the Province of Granda in Andalusia. According to the Granada Agrifood Cooperatives (FAECA) production is presently estimated at 9,828 mt, which marks an 11% decline on the 11,000 mt harvested last year.

Reason is that hail and snow along with persistent rain have reduced yields in northern Granada as fungi was prompted to spread and fruits to drop in some areas. Fortunately, the declines were partly offset by new plantations coming into production. Granada is Spain’s leading producing region with almonds growing on 70,000 ha, mainly in the north and around Alhama, Órgiva and Dúracel. As much as 90% of Granada’s almonds are exported as whole kernels, main export destinations are the EU member states of Germany, France and Italy and the Netherlands.

Most agricultural associations throughout Spain are urging the local industry to buy Spanish almonds as competition from California is fierce and it is well worthwhile to protect local producers, whose almonds are valued for their flavour and quality.

More offers issued for new crop

Recently the Young Farmers and Livestock Breeders Association (JARC) of Catalonia also stated that harvesting started one week early and that spring rains should help to boost yields. According to the Agrarian Association of Young Farmers (ASAJA) production will, however, range 15-20% smaller in Córdoba at 7,395-6,960 mt. With arrivals picking up here more offers are being issued for conventional almonds.
