TOLEDO. The almond orchards in the Spanish province of Castilla-La Mancha were struck by frost, and damages are estimated to reach up to 80%.

This figure was reported by the Agrarian Association of Young Farmers (Asaja). It will probably still take a few weeks until the actual extent of frost damage is known, but late-blooming varieties apparently were hardly affected.
Already in 2016, almond production in Castilla-La Mancha suffered a severe setback. The province dropped from the top 3 Spanish growing regions down to sixth place, as the crop was reduced by more than 55% compared to the previous year, not even reaching 3,250 mt.

Good prospects in the USA
The US almond crop is developing very well, but it is still too early to make more detailed predictions for the 2017/18 season. Market players estimate that the 2017 production will reach 905,000 to 1,040,000 mt. At this time of year, the farmers are mainly busy with nourishing and caring for their orchards, as they are currently still highly vulnerable to disease and mildew infestation.
