MADRID/SACRAMENTO. According to official figures from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture...

... almonds are cultivated on about 687,225 ha nationwide. In 2019, about 586,990 ha of this area could be harvested. In 2020, plantations with a total area of 622,808 ha are expected to be harvested. Just one sixth of the plantations are irrigated artificially, which is why the yield per hectare is much lower than in California, for example. The experts of TIOGA Nut Fruit Services expect an average yield of 975.96 kg per ha on the artificially irrigated plantations, and 107.44 kg per ha in areas without additional water supply. Based on these projections, the Spanish almond production in 2020 would reach 152,848 metric tonnes.

Good conditions during the flowering period and a satisfactory rainfall rate in March and April actually give hope for a good crop. Due to the high yield potential, even a downward correction of a few thousand tonnes would still result in a record crop.

Based on the criteria described above, TIOGA has also made an extrapolation for the Spanish organic almond crop. According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, around 133,377 hectares in Spain are certified for the cultivation of organic almonds. With an average yield per hectare of 104.52 kg per ha, the crop this year would amount to about 13,940 metric tonnes. Here too, corrections will probably be made before the harvest. This year's crop was at least spared from severe frost damage as in the 2019/2020 season.

Prices 0,85 EUR per kg cheaper

With not only the USA but also Spain expecting a record crop this year, prices on the European spot market are coming under further pressure. Spanish almonds are again up to 0.10 EUR per kg cheaper than in the previous weeks and from mid-July Spanish traders want to offer US almonds at significantly lower prices. Currently California almonds, SSR, 23/25, blanched, are still being offered for EUR 6.30 per kg FCA Spain. For deliveries from mid-June to December, traders are currently calculating EUR 5.45 per kg FCA.
