MADRID. Demand for Spanish almonds was quite high in the first two months of the season, especially in Western Europe. Question is how long this trend will last.

85% surge in exports

After witnessing a soaring increase in August Spain’s almond exports continued to accelerate in September. At 27,436 mt monthly exports stood more than twice as high as the 12,504 mt registered in September 2024. Total exports have surged by 85% to 42,025 mt in the first two months of the season.

Exports to Germany have thereby more than doubled to nearly 11,000 mt. Shipments to France are showing an impressive 87% gain. Exports to Italy have surged by 75%. Countries in Western Europe account for 88% (36,874 mt) and countries in Central and Eastern Europe for a much lower 8% (3,416 mt) of the total volume shipped this season so far.

Will demand last?

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) Spain’s inshell almond production has the potential to range 24% higher than last year at 467,521 mt as Agroinformacion highlights. While frost and drought were not an issue in 2025, the crop did show rather disappointing yields in the southern parts of the country. This prompted the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) to lower the estimate for almond kernels to 110,000-110,00 mt, thereby projecting a similar size to last year.

Demand in Western Europe has also boosted US exports and speculations prevail as to how long this situation will last. Issue is that many EU importers have been relying on a hand-to-mouth approach, whereas demand may well dip with buying for Christmas and New Year complete. According to the weekly Price Observatory issued by the Valencian Farmers’ Association ASAJA local almond prices were relatively firm in the week ending on 21 November - that is with the noted exception of Murcia were prices have risen.
