MADRID. Spain’s production will rise by 7% in 2026/2027. Yet, conditions have been mixed. Frost has hit organic production.

Production to climb by 7%

According to estimates issued by Spain’s leading agricultural associations, shelled almond production will range 7% higher than last year in 2026/2027 and as much as 33% higher than the five-year moving average of 101,775 mt as the press release issued by ASAJA, COAG, the Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España and AEOFRUSE states. The area, on which almonds are grown, has reached 645,964 ha, which is 6% up on last year’s 609,514 ha.

Mixed conditions

Main driver are new almond orchards turning productive. In the leading producing region of Andalusia production will climb by 18% as the area under cultivation has risen and the trees profited from rains in autumn, in winter and at the start of spring. Excessive rainfall has, however, caused damages in some areas. Growers will also keep an eye out for fungus. Climatic conditions have been good in many large producing areas, especially in Murcia, Valencia and Extremadura. By contrast, periods of drought, hot weather along with frost and local hailstorms have adversely impacted production in Castilla-La Mancha and the Balearic Islands. The almond seed wasp and the flat-headed root borer beetle are also giving rise to concerns.

Frost hits organic production

Organic almond production currently exceeds an area of 172,500 ha, which equates to 27% of the total area on which almonds are grown. Organic production will reach 3,238 mt in Andalusia with frost an issue this year as Agroinformacion reports. Frost affected the key-growing area of Granada in March with temperatures ranging as low as -6C (21F), prompting the entire crop to be lostin several municipalities. In Almeria, frost-driven losses also amount to an estimated 40%. Frost, in addition, impacted orchards in Jaén and in Málaga.
