Almonds: Nonpareil variety particularly affected by frost

SACRAMENTO/MADRID. The extent of the frost damage could still not be determined, hopes are pinned on the USDA's crop report and the first official crop forecast, both of which are due to be published within the next three weeks.

More clarity by mid-May

The US almond market still lacks an overview of how high the damage caused by the frost could actually be. The only thing that seems to be clear so far is that losses occurred mainly in the more northern and central regions, where the early blossom variety Nonpareil is said to have been particularly affected. Already this season, the reject rate for this variety was higher than for others and the experts from Blue Diamond Almonds report that demand is significantly higher than supply.
