MADRID. Spanish almonds are plagued by illnesses and parasites. Pressure from overseas is, however, so high that prices are going down further.

Spain is holding back
In March 2018, European countries imported a total of 27,044 mt almonds from the USA. Contrary to this, as little as 23,052 mt were imported in March 2017. In total, the import has been increased by 15% to 199,966 mt since the beginning of the season. Countries such as Germany and Italy, which rank amongst the most important European buyers, have increased the import of almonds from California by 16% and 24% respectively.
