SACRAMENTO. US exports climbed to a record high in December as the latest Position Report issued by California Almonds shows. Buyers in India will need to refill supplies. Weather conditions in California are too wet.

Record December exports

Monthly exports rose to a record 196.66 million pounds in December, which is also 11% up on the 177,04 million pounds recorded in December 2024. Domestic shipments, by contrast, fell by 12% from 56.05 million pounds in December 2024 to 49.1 million pounds in December 2025. At 245.76 million pounds monthly net shipments stood 5% higher than the 233.09 million pounds shipped in December 2024.

India requires supplies

However, year-to-date exports still range 3% lower than last year at 827.94 million pounds. Domestic shipments have witnessed a sharp 18% decline and total shipments are 7% down on last year. Exports to India as leading destination are 15% down on last year. Suppliers such as Select Harvest USA report that Indian buyers returned to the market in December and are convinced that supplies need to be refilled.

By contrast, shipments to Spain have risen by 20% despite local production being high this year. Exports to Western Europe as a whole are relatively flat on last year at 242.05 million pounds with different tendencies prevailing in induvial states. While exports to Italy have surged by 21%, shipments to the Netherlands have slumped by 38%. Germany is also sporting a 6% decline.

Exports to the United Arab Emirates may be lagging 2% behind last year, but shipments to Turkey have risen by 12%. In general, shipments to the Middle East range a bit higher than last season at 175.79 million pounds.

Vietnam is showing the most impressive surge of 73%. Reason is that China has reshuffled its supply chain over the uncertain economic trading relations with the USA and is currently buying in Southeast Asian states with the region showing a 52% uprise to 70.35 million pounds in US shipments.

Morocco has also witnessed an impressive rise of 41% and US exports to North Africa have increased by 29% this season so far to 46.84 million pounds.

Wet weather in California

At 2.51 billion pounds crop receipts stood 2.5% lower than in the previous year in December. Yet, the computed inventory ranged on a similar level of 1.88 billion pounds as in December 2024 and uncommitted inventory even stood 4% higher at 1.38 billion pounds.

As Select Harvest USA reports weather conditions have been a mixed blessing in California in December. Although the month was one of the wettest and rainiest Decembers on record, which has filled up reservoirs well above average, warmer temperatures have reduced snowpack, and the persistent wet conditions may impact quality. Crop size predictions stand at 2.65-2.75 billion pounds.
