MADRID/SACRAMENTO. Spain's almond exports are picking up again at the end of the season, with Germany and France remaining the top buyers. Prices have stabilised for the time being after the last correction.

France increases imports by almost 25%

Spain could not achieve a good almond crop this year; unfavourable weather conditions have caused the result to shrink in comparison to last year. However, exports at the end of the season once again showed their best side. In May, 11,182 mt of almonds* were exported from Spain, which is an increase of 12% compared to the same month last year (May 2021: 9,975 mt). About half of the export volume went to Germany (+1% to 2,229 mt), France (+18% to 2,221 mt) and Italy (-9% to 1,818 mt), with the UK (+2% to 567 mt) and Turkey (+5,446% to 555 mt) being the other important destination countries.

Total exports this season so far come to 127,156 mt (+10% yoy), of which about one-third is expected to be processed almonds, the other two-thirds are almond kernels. France emerged as the main buyer of Spanish almonds in the 2021/2022 season, importing 30,526 mt, almost a quarter more than the year before. Germany, meanwhile, slipped to second place, even though imports also rose by 7% year-on-year to 26,323 mt. Italy is a major buyer with around 21,605 mt (+5.5%), followed by the UK (-23% to 5,321 mt), Belgium (+35% to 5,125 mt) and Portugal (+25% to 4,272 mt).
