MADRID. The unofficial estimates for 2017 certainly promise the highest production in years. Optimists are, however, expecting an even greater increase in production.

An incredible 70,000 mt

The currently estimated more than 57,000 mt would lead to a 26% increase as compared to last year and would be the largest crop of the last few years. There are however, also rumours circulating that production could even reach as much as 70,000 mt this year. Many traders and farmers are already unhappy with the current price level, and the additional pressure to sell will hardly improve the situation. Prices for Spanish almonds are now largely stable, only the offers for blanched Valencias have dropped slightly this week.

Spain plays second fiddle

Overall, Germany imported an average of 90,000 mt of almonds over the last few years, almost two thirds of which stem from the USA. In the first three months of this season, 23,588 mt of almonds were sourced from five different countries. Last year it was as little as 21,113 mt. Due to bumper crops and lower prices the USA were able to sustain their leading position. Germany imported as much as 18,770 mt, whereas merely 3.200 mt were imported from Spain.
