Dramatic effects
Extreme weather events affected all major coconut and palm oil growing regions in Asia at the end of November and beginning of December. An unusual sequence of cyclones, typhoons and widespread flooding caused massive damage in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, southern Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam. The consequences range from destroyed infrastructure to evacuations, and there have been numerous casualties. International reports speak of one of the most comprehensive regional weather crises in decades – with increasingly noticeable effects on supply and logistics throughout the region, as reported by experts at JCP International.
The full extent of the crop damage is still being assessed; in addition to a possible decline in yields, there is a threat of disruptions in ports, transport and logistics, as well as delays and cost increases for shipments. If a decline in production is confirmed, increased price volatility is also to be expected. According to the market experts, this is a weather event affecting several countries of origin – not an isolated supply shock.
Prices significantly higher than last year
T.M. Duché states that export prices for desiccated coconuts have remained stable at USD 1.47-1.90/lb FOB for the thirteenth consecutive week, which is a substantial 73.5% higher than in November 2024. Unlike other coconut products, this allows for better planning, and the stability indicates a good balance between supply and demand. Lower buying interest in coconut oil is causing prices to fall, reflecting the general decline in the vegetable oil markets. Prices for copra also continue to decline. Freight rates for shipments from Asia to major European ports such as Rotterdam have continued to rise, with a 40' FCL now costing around USD 2,241.
