SACRAMENTO. According to the recently published position report of the Almond Board of California, the imports to the domestic market are going well. Export volumes are, however, declining.

Crop is catching up

So far, the US production has been registered at 378,012 mt, just over 1% less than around this time last year. The start to the harvest campaign was delayed. An estimated 1.11 million mt of almonds are to be produced this year, of which 1.09 million mt should be marketable. Together with the carry-over stocks, an estimated 1.25 million mt of US almonds will be available in 2018/19. Despite the larger crop, this would be 4.1% less than in 2017/18.

Export volume is 15% down on last year

The shipments to the domestic market continue on last year's level. Contrary to this, the export deliveries have fallen by 15% in the first two months of 2018/19. All of these shipments were still made with stocks from 2017/18; the 2018 crop will only be available for export in the coming weeks.

After a slight increase in imports in August, deliveries fell by 45% in September 2018. Overall, the country imported 38% less US almonds than in the first two months of 2017/18. The export volume to Turkey has continued to drop and now stands at -78%. Exports to Germany have declined considerably since 2017.

Contrary to this, Spain has increased imports by 24% in September and was partially able to compensate for the difference that arose in August. Countries such as Belgium, France and the Netherlands also imported far more almonds from the US last month than in September 2017.
