SACRAMENTO. Land IQ has issued a rather upbeat initial acreage estimate for California’s 2025 almond crop. Growers are, however, voicing concerns.

Acreage not too bad

Land IQ’s recently issued initial standing acreage estimate for the 2025 crop is not that bad. At 1.389 million bearing acres are relatively flat on last year’s 1.383 million acres. By contrast, the 51,805 removed acres fall 22% short of the 66,794 totally removed acres in 2024. This figure combines spatial analysis as of 31 March 2025 according to which 37,149 acres have already been removed as well as historical analysis and present conditions for 1 April through to 31 August, which suggest that another 14,656 acres will be removed. Expectation is that the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service will issue the subjective estimate before 12 May.

Less upbeat crop progress report

As Blue Diamond Almonds report in the recent Crop Progress Report for April a substantial number of orchards are presently being removed in California. On top of this, many orchards are receiving minimal or no care, which is quite a problem for growers with neighbouring orchards as these abandoned orchards are an ideal breeding ground for pests such as the navel orangeworm. Growers are presently engaged with pest management to contain and monitor this and other insects that can create extensive damage.

Apart from this, warm conditions have been reported throughout April and crop development has been good. The northern parts of the Central Valley have received more rain than the south and irrigation is now underway everywhere. Non-infectious bud failures have occurred for the Nonpareil and Carmel varieties driven by the hot weather last summer.
