Average yields are encouraging

New crop’s yields seem encouraging so far. Yet, it is buyers’ prices that discourage farmers.

The recent weather conditions have been favorable for the conduct of harvest on a mass scale throughout the country. After barley’s harvest, farmers have entered the fields of rapeseed.

The new crop: encouraging yields vs. discouraging prices

SOFIA. Some farmers from the North and Southeast regions, who have already harvested their fields, recorded higher average yields than they did during the previous year – the increase reaches as much as 7% in some regions per ha when compared to those of the previous season. The majority of those who are approaching the end of harvest are confident that the average yield this year will be higher.

However, it is not the yield, but the aggregate production on a national level that remains a concern. The national output of barley will be lower this year since the crop has definitely lost prominence among local farmers. For comparison, planted arable land of barley this year stood by 20.5% less than it did during season 2015-16. Even if the average yield on a national level happened to be higher, it would still not be high enough to make up for the lower projected output because of less cultivated land.

Currently, buyers’ offers for feed barley, new harvest, move within the range of 0.125 – 0.128 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. Barley for malt production is sold for 0.138 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria.
