SOFIA. Barely may be highly unpopular in Bulgaria, but the EU simply loves it.

Reluctant farmers
Due to the low prices the farmers have been reluctant to sow higher acreages of barley over the last few years. Nevertheless, total sown area amounted to 108,843 ha in Bulgaria in the end of last week meaning that barley ranks fourth after wheat, corn and rapeseed in terms of acreage. Barley is mainly cultivated in the Southeast where the soil and climate are most beneficial to the plants and the highest yields are produced.

Mainly exported to the EU
By the end of September 2016, domestic production was estimated at 727,1
