The market seems to need a push. Will farmers and intermediaries withhold the crop from the market to influence prices?

Prices of harvest 2016-17 started low -- about 0.124 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria -- at the end of harvest last year. Yet, they uncompromisingly maintained a strong beat throughout the whole season, reaching at the end as much as 0.138 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Because of the lower projected output this season, farmers and/or intermediary buyers might try to withhold the crop from the market and sell it later in the season for higher prices.

Barley: to be or not to be

SOFIA. Harvest already ended and soon the aggregate national output will be estimated. Although national production will be lower – farmers planted by about 20.4% less arable land last year than what they had done during the previous one, -- yields seem strong so far. Farmers from the North regions recorded yields as much as 5.4 mt/ha while the Ministry of Agriculture estimated the national average yield lately to be higher by about 8% than that of last season.

However, the stronger yields will not be able to cover the shortage of supply because of the lower planted areas. The crop has already lost favor among local farmers. Thus, this year’s output could be as much as 15% lower than that of the last one! Currently, farmers offer the crop for 0.130 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria while some already sold it for much less.
