Selling parties seem to withhold the crop from the market. Will that positively influence prices in the short-term or will there be a blowback?

SOFIA. After harvest finished in some fields throughout the North regions, farmers already started fulfilling their contracts. At that time, they were not willing to take a price lower than 0.124 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria.

Barley: hoodwink the market

The picture seems to have changed recently as intermediary parties seem to withhold the crop from the market. There is demand for the crop, but suppliers seem not willing to sell. Soon the Ministry of Agriculture will come up with an estimate of the most recent output, but whatever the number, all interested market participants expect aggregate production to be close to 600,000 mt this year. Barley is losing favor among local farmers – that has become quite apparent recently. Anyhow, intermediary parties, who buy locally to sell internationally, could influence prices. They simply withhold the crop.

Regional developments

Provided the forecast for a lower output of Ukrainian barley becomes real because of prolonged dry weather during the Spring in some regions, local suppliers of the crop could breathe a sigh of relief and hope for higher prices in the region.

One thing is certain, Turkey will record a higher output of barley this year, by as much as 36.84%, reaching an estimate of 6,500,000 mt, as a recent USDA update on Grain and feed of the country forecasted. Anyhow, the country mainly consumes what it harvests, so it is not a major threat for local sellers.
