AMSTERDAM. Recalls over salmonella have prompted organic chia seeds to make headlines in Canada. Supplies from South America and Uganda are currently available in Europe.

Salmonella in Canada

Chia seeds have made headlines in Canada after two recalls over salmonella in January. Not only did the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recall organic seeds sold by retail supplier Left Coast Organics but Navitas Organics also voluntarily recalled packages following a recall initiated by the company’s supplier. In the latter case, the product's distribution involved national retail stores and online retailers including Amazon, iHerb and Vitacost.com.
