SOFIA. The barley market in Bulgaria is facing a crisis as the crop is becoming increasingly unpopular.

Significant decrease
Sowing has significantly decreased by as much as 25.8% this year. The farmers have so far only sown as little as 102,620 ha, whereas acreage stood at 138,265 ha at the same time last year. There is a good reason for this decrease.

Looking for more profitable alternatives
Most farmers have switched to rapeseed, which is currently trading for much higher prices than barley, namely at 0.358 EUR/kg CPT domestic port. And the run on rapeseed is not over, which is why barley will hardly stand a chance in the near future. Barley is currently trading for 0.128 EUR/kg CPT domestic port, 10% lower than in November 2015.
