ASUNCIÓN. Delays in harvesting pose risks to the quality of this year’s crop. However, dramatic frost events such as those seen last year are not expected to occur. Growers have sown record acreages.

Moisture and harvest delays

In South America, the chia harvest is in full swing. However, market players are concerned about weather conditions, which could still affect yields at this stage. The strong El Niño poses risks of excessive moisture, which can lead to losses in yield and quality as well as an increased risk of aflatoxin formation, whilst also resulting in greater use of plant protection products. As experts from Ponto International report, the harvest is also being delayed, meaning the crops are exposed to adverse weather conditions for a longer than average period.

Furthermore, the frosts at the end of June had no major consequences; however, whilst no yield losses are expected as in the previous year, further frost damage is anticipated.

Ponto International estimates that the area sown in Paraguay this year has grown to a record 240,000-260,000 ha; an average to good crop could, in this case, yield 120,000-130,000 mt – which would represent an increase of around 50% on last year.

Prices for the new crop

Price indications for the new crop stand at USD 2,400-2,500 FOB Asunción for conventional black chia seeds. Organic chia from the new crop is quoted at USD 2,730-2,800/mt FOB.
