Even though barley is going out of favor with local farmers, this year’s remaining stocks could quickly be depleted because of higher than expected exports.

Barley: the higher yield supported a higher than expected output

SOFIA. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 27th of this month, harvested area of barely reached 99%; aggregate production was estimated at 622,168 mt. The final number of season 2017-18 harvest will stand by about 10% lower than that of harvest 2016-17, which reached 697,787 mt.

The lower output on a yearly basis does not come as a negative surprise at all, since last year, farmers planted by about 20% less arable land. Just the opposite; the output was projected to be even lower, but because of the higher yield this season (4.7 mt/ha) and the minor fallen through acreages during the Winter, it actually will dwindle only by about 10%. Last year’s aggregate yield was estimated at 4.3 mt/ha.

This year exports could surprise local farmers

What was not expected though was the mounting export activity of barely so early in the marketing season. By week 30, exports reached 116,000 mt, as only via Varna seaport shipments reached 44,591 mt, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. By that time last year, exports via the seaport were zero. All exports went to EU member countries. More ships are at the port.
