Blue poppy seeds: 30% decline in cultivation expected

CHRUDIM. The decline in poppy seed cultivation in the Czech Republic is becoming more concrete. As a result, exporters have adjusted their prices for prompt shipments and indications for new crop are also at a correspondingly high level.

Blue poppy seeds are less attractive

Higher production costs and uncertainties about how the demand situation will develop, combined with rising prices for other agricultural commodities, are causing Czech farmers to grow less poppy fields this year. Market players are currently talking about sowings being about 30% lower than last year. This would bring the acreage for the 2022/2023 poppy seed crop to about 30,500 ha, and with an average yield of 0.65 mt/ha, production could reach a result of less than 20,000 mt, dropping to the second lowest level i
