CHRUDIM. Good yields at least slightly reduced the cultivation deficit last year, but there is no guarantee of this in 2023. The Czech poppy seed market is therefore likely to face another sharp drop in production.

Even an increase in yields would not save the day

Above-average yields were able to mitigate the production deficit in the Czech poppy seed market last year. This year, however, there is no guarantee of that. Due to unfavourable weather conditions, the area under poppy cultivation in 2022 was a good 40% smaller than last year at 26,000 ha. However, yields of just under 0.80 mt/ha prevented the crop volume from slipping below 20,000 mt.

For the coming 2023/2024 growing season, forecasts continue to speak of a further reduction in acreage by about 30
