Blue poppy seeds: farmers hope for further price increases

CHRUDIM/ANKARA. The partly low quality of the last crop continues to pose challenges for exporters. A decline in farmgate prices is also not in sight for the time being.

Quality leaves much to be desired

Czech market players report some problems with their goods, which were harvested under suboptimal conditions and therefore sometimes had too high a moisture content. The intensive drying process led to a bitter taste. Other parameters such as cadmium, glyphosate and the morphine content, however, are not a problem. According to traders, it is currently difficult to find high-quality blue poppy seeds for export. Czech stocks are still estimated at 14,000 mt, but farmgate prices have skyrocketed in recent weeks and
