PRAGUE. The traders in the Czech Republic are despairing. Sluggish demand and enormous supplies are forcing them to desperate measures. But there may be a good incentive for their customers to buy.

High quality seeds may run low

Traders reckon that high quality seeds may start to run low in summer. The problem last year’s summer rains, which had an adverse impact on the taste. Thereby resulting in an equally large crop as 2015 with poorer quality. The purity and look of the seeds, however, pose no problems.

The prices are mainly stable. But some traders are, nevertheless, prepared to reduce their prices. They prefer to accept smaller profits rather than risk losing their customers.

Farmers may sow as much as last year

Sowing is about to start soon. Although the low price level should prompt the farmers to sow less, some traders nevertheless expect acreage to be similarly large as last year (ca. 35,000 ha). If this is the case the prices will remain stable throughout 2017/18.
