CHRUDIM. The Czech Republic is reckoning with an especially good blue poppy seed crop this year. Prospects are also highly encouraging in Slovakia and in Hungary as the areas sown have increased and yields are good. Supplies should not be a problem in 2024/2025.

Early harvest and good prospects

According to official statistics the area sown amounts to 35,000 ha in the Czech Republic this year, which is clearly up on the 26,000 ha sown last year. In addition, the poppy harvest has started much earlier than in recent years. With harvesting 75% complete farmers are mainly reporting average to above-average yields of 0.70-0.75 mt/ha. Yet, there also are places where yields are very low. General expectation is that 28,000-29,000 mt will be harvested, around 10,000 mt more than last year. The neighbouring states Hungary and Slova
