Blue poppy seeds: Optimistic expectations

CHRUDIM. The Czech Republic is by far the most important blue poppy seed producer in Germany. But the recent import figures may come as a surprise to some exporters.

Imports have dropped
Due to the bumper crop in the Czech Republic in 2014 Germany imported a record 4,111 mt in 2015. In 2014 imports only amounted to 2,473 mt and in 2013 they were as low as 1,270 mt. Although these figures show an continuous increase in demand in Germany, the situation appears to have changed in 2016. By the end of September Germany had only imported 2,235 mt, which is almost 800 mt less than in the same period last year.
