Blue poppy seeds: sharp rise in exports

ANKARA/CHRUDIM. There was a noted increase in poppy seed acreage in Turkey last year, a trend which is set to continue in 2020 as the government has issued further grants. Export revenues have also risen notably. Meanwhile, the farmers in the Czech Republic refuse to accept the current market situation.

Export revenues nearly double

Acreage has mainly increased in the Aegean region and will continue to do so this year. Turkey also intends to improve yields and quality. According to the Aegean Grain, Pulses, Oil Seeds and Products Exporters' Association Turkey shipped poppy seeds worth USD 86 million overseas in 2018. This a sharp rise of 190% over the USD 29 million generated in 2017.
