FRANKFURT. Brazil nuts are not mainly produced in Brazil, as the name might suggest. The main producer rather is Bolivia.

An increasing number of aflatoxin findings caused the EU Commission to impose strict regulations for the import of in shells in July 2013. This mainly affected imports from Brazil. The EU, however, mainly imports shelled nuts from Bolivia.

Although brazil nuts grow in capsules the size of coconuts and contain as much as 15-50 nuts, which pose a serious threat for cars and passers-by, it is prohibited to cut down the tress in Brazil. Therefore, trees can be found in gardens and at roadsides.
