Butter: New Aldi price comes as a shock

FRANKFURT. In January, the market almost came to a complete standstill with all eyes set on the contract negotiations with the retailers for February. Now Aldi has announced a new price, which spells disaster for the market in Germany.

Aldi lowers butter price by 20 cents/kg

Aldi has lowered the price for packet butter by as much as 20 cents/kg. Farmers and dairies alike are dismayed by this drastic decline. For the small farmers it is becoming increasingly difficult to even cover their costs. Problem is that the big dairies are no longer interested in providing empty trucks to small farms, which have only few cows. These farms need to be highly creative in selling to local markets and producing cheese.
