KEMPTEN/BRUSSELS. In Germany, discounters are desperately trying to compete with sunny conditions with attractive prices for butter. EU exports have launched the current year with a bang.

Low prices to attract customers

According to the South German Butter and Cheese Exchange in Kempten butter arrivals have reached a plateau and should peak in the next week or so, before declining. Demand for table butter has revived again and will very much depend on the weather. Discounters are trying to prompt customers to visit the shops with low prices. Table butter is trading firm in Kempten at EUR 4.20-4.85/kg (USD 4.91-5.67/kg). As buyers are still holding back, the quotations for bulk butter have declined to EUR 3.85-4.00/kg (USD 4.50-4.68/kg) in Kempten.
