Butter: crazy run on EU supplies

KEMPTEN/BRUSSELS. Ridiculously low prices have prompted quite a twist in EU butter exports in March. Although shipments to the USA have almost doubled, Singapore has taken the lead for European exporters. Expectation is that the market will turn in Germany.

Long wait pays off in Germany

Unseasonal cold and wet weather conditions in May have tested the industry’s patience in Germany. Fortunately, the recent holidays have brought some relief and bulk butter sales are finally up as the Southern German Butter and Cheese Exchange reports. The industry is certainly buying more actively at present, which has caused bulk butter quotations in Kempten to rise to EUR 4.55-4.70/kg. Table butter quotations are firm at EUR 4.80-5.06/kg, although demand is good.
