Butter: Internal demand weighs on EU exports

WASHINGTON D.C./FRANKFURT. The Foreign Agricultural Service has drastically revised its EU butter production estimates in the most recently published dairy report. Market players in Germany are becoming increasingly concerned over the impact the persisting dry weather will have on feed supplies. Butter may become a luxury product in post-Brexit UK.

 

EU production set to increase

High domestic and export demand has prompted an increase in EU milk production, which also benefits butter production. FAS currently estimates total EU milk production for 2018 at 155.6 million mt for this year – a rise of 1% over last year. For butter production is set to rise by 2% to 2.39 million mt. This rise is, however, not only prompted by the larger supplies of milk but also by the high price level. Domestic demand caused prices to surge in 2017, production, however, declined.
