FRANKFURT/BRUSSELS. Retail demand for butter is currently exceeding expectations in Germany. Consumers have started baking for Christmas, while the country has entered a lockdown light. The situation is, however, different for bulk butter.

Concerns over supplies in Germany

Europe’s hospitality sector is hard-hit as member states are introducing stringent measures to curb the surge in coronavirus infections. Partial and regional lockdowns have been implemented in several countries including Ireland, England and France, Spain, Italy and Germany. Since restaurants, bars and cafés have once again been forced to limit sales to takeaways and deliveries, accommodation and leisure facilities have been closed and events cancelled, demand is highly subdued in the sector.
