Butter: strong demand overwhelms manufacturers

KEMPTEN/BRUSSELS. Manufacturers in Germany are overwhelmed by the strong retail demand for butter at the start of the Christmas season. EU exports retained their record strength in September.

Expensive gamble

As the Southern German Butter and Cheese Exchange in Kempten reports the released quantities for retailers are proving a challenge for manufactures. Some are buying cream at high spot market prices that by no means match their turnover for butter. Table butter quotations have risen to EUR 5.80-5.90/kg (USD 6.34-6.45/kg) in Kempten on the back of high demand. Yet, bulk butter quotations range surprisingly firm at EUR 5.60-5.70/kg (USD 6.12-6.23/kg) given that demand is also very strong here. Issue is that prices are not attractive enough to prompt bu
