Cashews: Drastic price cuts in India

HANOI/NEW DELHI. International competition has forces the exporters in India to cut back in prices. The market is currently witnessing the lowest prices in months.

Competitive pressure

The news that a cyclone had damaged 70% of the cashew plantations in Andhra Pradesh drove up prices in India towards the end of last week. Production will most certainly  decline in this region. Now, however, the export prices have slumped with cashew kernels trading below USD 10 per kg FOB. This is the lowest seen in months. Cheap imports  coupled with subdued upcountry and export demand are adding pressure to the market. In addition, the prices on the world market remain  low and are dictated by the top exporter Vietnam.
